About The Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge Project in Washington, DC
The Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge Project in Washington, DC, calls for replacing the 68-year-old bridge and reconstruction of the Suitland Parkway/I-295 interchange. The bridge has been classified functionally obsolete and needs to be replaced due to its condition, age, and functional limitations. This project will increase pedestrian and vehicular safety, improve multimodal transportation options, increase community accessibility and support economic development on both sides of the Anacostia River.
This new bridge construction project is one in a series of transportation, environmental, economic, community, and recreation projects developed by the larger Anacostia Waterfront Initiative (AWI) Program. From the Tidal Basin to the city’s northeast border with Maryland, the 30-year, $10 billion AWI Program is transforming the shores of the Anacostia River into a world-class waterfront and enriching nearby communities. Learn More About Our Proposed Bridge Construction in Washington D.C.
Built in 1950, today the nearly 70-year old Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge is used by more than 77,000 commuters daily. With the current bridge now past its useful lifespan, we hope to revitalize the community with our ambitious bridge construction project. The proposed replacement bridge is scheduled to open in March 2021.
Its new design will feature four pedestrian overlooks, three above-deck arches, and two piers that will appear to float on the river. When complete, the new bridge will have six traffic lanes as well as improved accommodations for bicycle and pedestrian traffic. These modifications are expected to allow traffic to circulate seamlessly to and from either side of the Anacostia River and the front of the Air Force base west of the highway.
We believe our bridge reconstruction effort will help us better connect with the community and forge a steady path forward. When our bridge construction project is completed, the finished structure will serve as a fitting memorial to one of American’s most remarkable civil leaders. The new bridge, which will set roughly 100 feet away from the existing bridge, will enhance the area’s transportation infrastructure and support continued efforts to revitalize the Anacostia Waterfront.
